The 'first' time I wanted to quit medicine, I was in my 5th year of residency.
Work was making critical, urgent decisions in the ICU amidst a fragmented care system that used faxes and clunky technology. I was burned out, and so were my colleagues, from a system that consistently placed obstacles between us and our patients.
Around this time, hospitals faced substantial penalties for patient readmissions, and I seized the chance.

After one year, I successfully built a new program that leveraged technology, streamlined operations and dropped readmissions for patients with COPD by 30%. This experience was so fundamental that I pivoted my career as a physician scientist, to focusing on how to redesign healthcare to keep our healers in it.
